World Music In-Schools
Door Dog's year-round World Music In-Schools program enables today's young people to experience first hand the many traditional cultures of the world. We provide creative opportunities for children and youth who otherwise have limited access to studying traditional cultural arts - such as Chinese music, Indian music, Persian music, and more.
Every year, we bring Bay Area world music masters from several countries into schools within the San Francisco Unified School District. These masters teach private and group instrumental lessons, present assembly programs to elementary school classes, lead residency programs, and provide invaluable resources for teachers interested in traditional music and culture. In this way, we also preserve cultural heritage among recent immigrant communities through world music masters who foster the generational transfer of musical traditions, and enable immigrant artists to share their expertise within their cultural communities.
Originally, our World Music In-Schools program started in 1996 from an introductory world music workshop called "Cultural Awareness Through Music" held in a basement theater of a San Francisco Chinatown music center. Today, our World Music In-Schools program is a multi-cultural music educational program designed to complement existing elementary school curriculums (grades K-12), and explores diverse world cultures through the many facets of the music and the unique musical communication expressed within these social structures. School classes are offered throughout the school year as a touring program of culture-specific soloists and ensembles.
