The Second San Francisco World Music Festival 2001

Our Second Annual SFWMF May 9th - June 3, 2001 featured approximately 25 different performance ensembles from the Bay Area and from outside of California (Los Angeles, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Southern Africa, Southern India). From Cowell Theater in San Francisco and Ashkenaz in Berkeley to Elbo Room in San Francisco and Hush Hush in San Francisco), the festival's different venues format -- Folk Dance, DJ Dance, Chamber Series, Concert Hall -- gave audiences various alternatives to global music, whether dub music in a club or a formal concert in a proscenium theater. Opening with a Round Table Discussion on "The Union of Folk Music & Dance presented by SFWMF and SF Ethnic Dance Festival", "Urban Music Round Table and Round Table Showcase", "Musicicans Talk About World Music" Discussion, the festival featured the following artists:

Master Classes at San Francisco State University:
"Music of the Turkic People" with Kutay Derin Kugay and "Arabic Music" with Georges Lammam Ensemble;

Performances at Ashkenaz: Cascada de Flores, Edessa, Nigerian Brothers & Zulu Exiles Acoustic, Shoko Hikage Ensemble, Paul Pena & Friends, World Trance Trio by Jai Uttal, Stephen Kent, and Geoffery Gordan;

Performances at Elbo Room:
Los Compas with DJ BabaLoup, Nobody From Ipanema, Jesus Diaz & Su QBA with DJ BabaLoup, Dub Mission: Romy Dee & the Rhythm Doctors plus DJ Sep;
